What is a dental crown?
A dental crown is basically a tiny cap that fits over a damaged or worn-down tooth. Once in place, it both hides and protects your tooth’s weakened area. The result is a healthier and more pleasing smile, as our dental crowns use pretty and durable porcelain.
Given how dental crowns work, the ideal candidates for them tend to have:
- A cracked or broken tooth
- Teeth damaged by old silver fillings
- Teeth worn down by bruxism (i.e., a habit of tooth grinding)
- Unfillable cavities
- A tooth that just had a root canal
All that said, please consult our dentists before you settle on a treatment.

The Dental Crown Process
The average dental crown procedure takes two dental visits; however, our practice also offers same-day dental crowns that are crafted in-house by our state-of-the-art SprintRay 3D printer. At the first appointment, we’ll prep your tooth to receive its restoration. Our team will place your dental crown at the second visit a few weeks later if it’s being crafted by a laboratory.
For the first treatment session, we’ll prep you for your crown. This work requires us to remove some enamel from the treated tooth. After this removal, we’ll make an impression of the now-prepared tooth and send it to a dental lab. Lab workers will then use the impression to craft your final restoration. Since their crafting method takes a few weeks, you’ll wear a temporary crown in the meantime.
You’ll attend the follow-up visit when your dental crown is ready. Placing this restoration shouldn’t take long. Our dentists will simply set the crown in place and make some last-minute changes to ensure a good fit. From there, we’ll polish it send you on your way!

The Benefits of Getting a Dental Crown
Unless you get a damaged tooth treated, it’ll cause a host of oral problems. Luckily, a dental crown lets you avoid those issues altogether. It offers crucial benefits like:
- A Gorgeous Grin – Our dental crowns use high-grade porcelain, so they match your other teeth in color, shape, etc. You can trust them to blend seamlessly with your grin.
- Tooth Protection – Dental crowns are pretty durable, all things considered. Not only can they protect weak teeth from bacteria, but they can also handle your mouth’s bite force. Getting one means you won’t need root canals or tooth extractions.
- Versatility – A dental crown covers the whole top of your tooth, meaning it can fix several oral issues. It can fix cavities, tooth chips, fractures, and more.
- Long-Lasting Results – Given the proper care, a dental crown’s lifespan can reach 15 years or more. You’ll want to care for your new cap to get the most out of it.
